APN Series - Practical Use of Indirect Calorimetry in the Elite Athlete

This webinar explores the practical application of indirect calorimetry in athletics, focusing on how performance dietitians can use data to enhance the athlete experience and drive evidence-based nutrition care. Attendees will learn how to implement indirect calorimetry protocols within and outside their programs if they are unable to house it internally. Emphasis will be placed on identifying appropriate use cases—including low-energy availability and weight-class sports—while also addressing logistical considerations such as time, cost, and athlete compliance.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate considerations for conducting indirect calorimetry assessments, including setup, preparation, and protocol standardization.
  2. Identify common sources of measurement error and implement strategies to improve data validity.
  3. Determine when indirect calorimetry is warranted in case specific situations, including instances such as low energy availability, weight class sports, and composition changes.
  4. Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to integrate data into comprehensive care.
